PACKAGE 03 — QUIET ZONE
What goes into the land behind the wall — stated 1 September 2026

Put the wardrobe on the wall beside the door so the case never crosses the room.

Wheel diameter is the whole specification: a 10 cm suitcase wheel needs smooth hard surface and nothing else; 25 cm crosses compacted gravel and firm mown grass; 33 cm crosses soft grass, shallow ruts and decomposed granite. Pneumatic tyres are also silent, which matters here.
130Even with carts, ONE spine must be hard-paved — because of the rain.openThis is the part carts do not solve. In the monsoon a grass or earth path turns to mud, and a loaded cart on mud is worse than a suitcase on paving. So: a hard spine about 120 m × 1.5 m = 180 m² from the drop-off to the hut cluster, usable in any weather, with soft spurs of about 160 m × 1.2 m = 192 m² of compacted decomposed granite from the spine to each hut door. 372 m² of the 900 m² path budget; the rest of the garden walks can be anything.
135Matte stone, like brick?openMatte is right, and brick is right about the FINISH — but the two questions are separate. On finish, wet slip resistance settles it: polished granite reads about PTV 20 and fails badly, smooth trowelled concrete about 35 is marginal, while clay brick, flamed granite and washed aggregate concrete all sit around 55–65 and pass. Thirty-six is the threshold. So: matte, always. Never polished, and never laterite on a shaded path — it looks perfectly Thai and then grows algae and drops to about PTV 25.
136But brick brings a second thing with it: the MODULE.openA brick is 200 mm long, so a wheel crosses a joint every 200 mm — about 600 joints over the 120 m spine. A 600 mm slab gives 200, a 900 mm slab 133, in-situ concrete about 30. Every one of those is a small jolt for a suitcase wheel. So the proposal is to split it: LARGE-FORMAT matte stone on the spine, where the wheels run and the rain has to drain; brick or another small unit on the garden walks and terraces, where the look matters more than the rolling. Same matte family, same colour, two sizes — and nobody reads it as two materials.
132Stone slabs laid in a run, with a small gap between them.openYes — and the gap you can afford is decided entirely by which wheel crosses it. A wheel drops into a joint by R − √(R² − (g/2)²). A 50 mm suitcase wheel drops 0.5 mm into a 10 mm joint, 2.1 mm into 20 mm and 5.0 mm into 30 mm, where it starts to jolt and catch. A 330 mm pneumatic cart wheel drops 0.7 mm into 30 mm and only 1.9 mm into 50 mm. So: if guests wheel their own cases, joints must be 13 mm or less and the slabs are effectively butt-jointed. If the carts do the carrying, joints up to 50 mm pass unnoticed — and those can be planted with grass or moss, which is the look you want. Buying the carts is what buys the planted joint.
133LIPPAGE matters more than the gap.openThe step between one slab and the next stops a wheel harder than the joint does: 3 mm of lippage is worse than a 20 mm joint. Slabs bedded on loose sand settle unevenly and lippage grows year by year. So the spine at least must be laid on a compacted base with a bound bedding — mortar or cement-stabilised sand — not loose sand. Lippage tolerance 3 mm.
134The finish must be slip-resistant wet, and the paving must shed water.openMonsoon rain, and people walking in sandals or barefoot. Flamed or bush-hammered stone, never honed or polished. Crossfall 1:60 to 1:80 so water runs off instead of standing. Gravel-filled joints wash out in heavy rain unless they are resin-bound; planted joints hold, but need trimming.

108Waterfall — CLOSE TO THE MEDITATION HALL, to mask outside noise.open12 × 8 = 96 m² of rock and planting, feeding the pond, pump chamber built into the bank. A cascade of this size runs about 58 dB(A) at 3 m and falls 6 dB every time the distance doubles. Road noise reaching the quiet zone is 40–45 dB(A); masking wants the water about 5 dB above that at the listener. So: stand it 6–10 m from the meditation hall wall, where it reads 48–52 dB(A) — enough to bury the road. Sleeping wants 40 dB(A) or less, which the same cascade reaches at 25 m, so the nearest Hako must be 25 m away or more. The two rules do not fight: the hall and the huts are different buildings.

The audit gaps — answered by the client, 2 September 2026
137Toilets beside the meditation hall: 2 for men, 2 for women, ONE BLOCK EACH SIDE.metAbout 2.60 × 3.20 = 8.3 m² a block, 16.6 m² for the two — ten less than I had allowed. Splitting them left and right also keeps the hall quiet: nobody files down one corridor. FOR THE RECORD, not a change: two WCs serve twenty people at ten each, which a fifteen-minute break clears at seven. Comfortable on a twenty-minute break, tight on a ten. Worth knowing before the timetable is set.
138The monks stay in the MEN’S zone. Nine do not come at once.metSo the Hako units in the men’s zone are the monks’ rooms, not a spare. That settles item 101 for that zone at the top of its range — two, not one — because a monk needs a room of his own rather than a bed in a twin. If more than two ever come at once, say so now: it means a third Hako, and it is far cheaper to draw than to add.
139The monks eat at a table in the dining hall, in a screened zone — SCREENED, NOT WALLED.metA table for five at 0.70 m each is 3.50 × 0.90 m; with the screen and room to serve, about 4.5 × 3.0 = 13.5 m² out of the 154 m² hall. Put it at the servery end so the offering reaches it without crossing the buffet queue. The screen reads as a boundary without shutting the room: a low screen at 1.2–1.5 m, or full height but open — lattice, slats, bamboo. Never solid.
140The treatment plant is IN.metAbout 10.4 m³ a day, in a packaged plant of roughly 3.0 × 7.0 m, mostly buried, sited as far from the canal as the plan allows. STILL OPEN: whether the treated effluent irrigates the garden. If it does, the 347 m² disposal field disappears and the garden waters itself.
141The water tanks are IN.metTwo 15 m³ tanks, a pump set and a filter — about 24 m², two days of the 12.3 m³ daily draw. They also give the site its fire-water reserve.
144Power, water and treatment become ONE service compound against the inner wall.open60 + 24 + 21 = about 105 m². One compound, one door, one vehicle route. CORRECTION to what I wrote earlier: these vehicles DO cross the inner wall, because the compound is behind it. The thing to hold when the layout is drawn is that they should get no deeper than they must — keep the compound hard against the wall, near the gate.
145There must be a VEHICLE GATE and a road into the quiet zone — otherwise the two-car port behind the wall cannot be reached.metCaught by the client 2 September 2026; the gate was missing from the drawing. Now a 3.8 m gate in the inner wall, set exactly IN LINE with the IN leg of the turning drive, so a project vehicle drives straight on through while a visitor curves right into the bend. One entry, two destinations, decided nine metres in — no extra junction, no extra gate on the road.
146The road is drawn in, but its ROUTE is not specified — that is the architect’s.metInstructed 2 September 2026. The same orange road, 3.8 m, carried straight on north through the gate and simply stopping. How it then reaches the two-car port, the service compound and the huts, and where it turns round, is not drawn: it belongs with the rest of the quiet-zone layout. What this sheet fixes is only that the road gets in at all, and on which line.
142A maintenance and garden store, about 20 m².openStill not confirmed. Mowers, tools, hoses, spare pumps and the three carts under cover. If it is not drawn it will appear as a lean-to against the back of the kitchen.
Meeting room and library — stated 2 September 2026
147A meeting room, doubling as the library.openProposed 6.0 × 7.0 = 42 m². A table for twelve at 3.6 × 1.2 m needs 5.6 × 3.2 with a metre all round; shelving 16 m of wall at 0.30 m deep is 4.8 m² of floor and 96 linear metres of shelf — about 3,100 volumes; four reading seats at the window; the rest circulation. It also fills a gap nobody had named: there is currently nowhere on the site to hold a conversation. The meditation hall is for sitting, and talking in it spends the silence you built it for.
148THE ONE HONEST OBJECTION: a meeting is speech and a library is silence.openThe two uses do not fight for space — shelves on the walls, table in the middle, they fit each other perfectly. They fight for TIME. Start a meeting and whoever was reading gets up and leaves. On a site this small that is manageable, but only if it is managed: hold meetings while the guests are sitting in the hall, and leave the room to the readers the rest of the day. Worth deciding as a rule now rather than discovering it as a friction later.
149Put it beside the meditation hall, not beside the office.openThe staff meet weekly; the guests would read daily. Serve the daily user. Beside the hall it shares the same approach and the same new toilets, it sits in ground that is already meant to be silent, and it becomes the natural room for a teacher to see a practitioner one to one — which has to be near the hall anyway. The argument for putting it by the office is that staff walk less; the argument against is that everyone else walks more.
150Books need a dehumidifier in this climate — allow for it now.openPaper moulds above about 65% relative humidity and Thai ambient runs 75–85%. A small unit left running, about 0.3 kW, costs roughly 1,300 kWh and 6,000 baht a year. Also: no timber shelving in contact with the ground, because of termites and silverfish, and no window throwing direct sun onto the spines. Cheap to allow for, and the reason most tropical libraries lose their collection.
Power — stated 1 September 2026
111A power house, for a solar installation.openNow about 6 × 10 = 60 m², because an all-electric site needs a larger battery and a three-phase board: battery room 28 m² fire-separated and force-ventilated, inverter and switch room 16 m², incoming supply and metering 16 m², with the PEA transformer standing outside it. Batteries are heavy, so it must be reachable by a vehicle WITHOUT entering the quiet zone — put it against the inner wall beside the waste holding area, sharing the same service door.
112Panels go on the roofs, not on the ground.openAbout 798 m² of roof across the dining hall, kitchen, meditation hall, laundry, staff blocks and café. At 60% usable that is 479 m² of panel ≈ 126 kWp, which in Thailand yields roughly 500 kWh a day. Ground-mounting the same array would cost about 375 m² of the garden for no gain.

116Daily energy against what the roofs can make.openAbout 659 kWh a day. The 126 kWp of roof-mounted panel yields roughly 504 kWh — 77%. The site is grid-connected with solar, NOT off-grid; the utility supply must still be sized for the full 72 kW.
117Battery, if the night is to run on stored sun.openNight load — Hako air conditioning for 8 hours, some lighting, the pumps — is about 128 kWh. At 80% depth of discharge that means installing about 160 kWh. This is the single most expensive item in the electrical scope; decide whether it is worth it or whether the night simply comes off the grid.
